Energy and demographic information about communities in Alaska including fuel
prices, fuel price projections, Power Cost Equalization program data, population
data, and geographic information.
AEA Sponsored AVTEC Training by Year
AVTEC training courses completed by year by community. The graduates recorded in this data set had their AVTEC expenses
paid by the Alaska Energy Authority.
Alaska Community Aid Program Payments
Community Aid Program payments and application information for municipalities and unicorporated communities.
The State of Alaska defines the Community Aid Program as follows: "In Fiscal Year 2016 the Alaska Legislature passed SB 210, which renamed Community Revenue Sharing (CRS) to The Community Assistance Program (CAP), effective January 1, 2017.
CAP provides Alaska's boroughs, cities, and unincorporated communities with funds vital to the delivery of basic public services. CAP funds can be used for any public purpose that have been determined as a priority of the funding recipient."

Community Aid and Assistance section of the State of Alaska website.
Alaska Fuel Price Projections: Community-Level
The Institute of Social and Economic Research publishes an Alaska Fuel Price Projection once a year. These data series project annual fuel prices for 20 years in the future. The calculations are based on the Energy Information Administration's Annual Energy Outlook publication in combination with data from the Power Cost Equalization (PCE) Program to project prices for diesel fuel for each community participating in the Alaska PCE. Prices in urban communities are also projected. This dataset contains community-level fuel price projections. Dataset revised Feb 7, 2014: Galena projection revised
Building Retrofit Data
Estimated energy usage by different non-residential buildings or facilities before retrofit and after retrofit.
Community
Basic community information such as community name, latitude, longitude,
geographic codes, and the various regions that include each community.
Decennial Census Population by Age Brackets and by Community
This dataset contains 2000 and 2010 decennial U.S. Census data by community
for total population by five-year age brackets for male and female.
Decennial Census Population by Community
This dataset contains 1990, 2000, and 2010 decennial U.S. Census data for total
population and population by race for Alaska communities.
Energy Prices from UAF Cooperative Extension Service Food Cost Survey
The University of Alaska Cooperative Extension Service conducts a quarterly Food
Cost Survey. The surveys are conducted during the second week of March, June,
September and December. Each quarter about two dozen communities are surveyed;
although the communities surveyed may slightly change each quarter. In addition,
price data for electricity, heating oil, gasoline and propane are collected.
The survey data is publicly available. The data available in the AEDG is a
subset of the CES FCS data that includes only fuel prices. Details regarding the
survey methodology for fuel prices are discussed in the working paper Utility
Prices: The Alaska Food Cost Survey (PDF) authored by Bret Luick, Food and Nutrition
Specialist and Joshua Greenberg, Associate Professor of Resource Economics. For
additional information or questions please refer to the UAF CES FCS website.
Erosion Risk by Community
This dataset contains community erosion risk assessments by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District from the report
Study Findings and Technical Report: Alaska Baseline Erosion Assessment. March 2009. A list of supplemental communities
that are in the report but not present in the U.S. Census. 2010 is provided in the document
Erosion - Supplemental Communities.
Fuel Price Survey Data
Data from the semiannual survey conducted by the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) for use in AHFC's energy programs and stored in the AkWarm database. AHFC collaborates with the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED), Division of Community and Regional Affairs (DCRA) to include data from communities surveyed by DCRA. Prices for home heating fuel (No. 1 and No. 2 fuel oil, propane, and wood) are collected from vendors serving communities around the state and reflect the price reported by the vendor at the point in time of the survey. Sales tax is included since 2011, but may be included or excluded in prior surveys. The inclusion of sales tax causes prices for some communities in this dataset to be higher than prices reported in the DCRA survey.
Local Taxes by Municipality
Tax revenue for Alaska municipalities. This tax revenue is broken down by category and year for each municipality.
For more information about local taxes in Alaska, please visit the Alaska Taxable Database.
Population Estimates by Community and Year
These annual population estimates are produced by the Alaska Department of Labor
and Workforce Development (AKDoLWD) based on the U.S. Census counts. The census
counts are extrapolated using unique statistical methods by AKDoLWD to produce
the most accurate available estimates of population in communities across
Alaska.
Power Cost Equalization (PCE) Data
The goal of Alaska Energy Authority's (AEA) Power Cost Equalization program is to provide economic assistance to customers in rural areas of Alaska where the kilowatt-hour charge for electricity can be considerably higher than the charge in more urban areas of the state. This dataset contains information reported monthly to AEA by participating utilities. The data available here (AEDG) was reviewed and cleaned for to meet AEDG data quality standards. Since some utilities may not report every month of the year, missing data are not uncommon.
Detailed information about the data cleaning methodology is provided in the document
Power Cost Equalization - Data Cleaning Methodology Notes by Alejandra Villalobos Melendez (PDF).
Power Cost Equalization (PCE) Data (Includes Uncleaned Years)
Warning: This data set includes uncleaned data that is subject to major change during the cleaning process.
